Project Overview

Link was appointed as the development partner to the Australian War Memorial (AWM), for the development of their Kids Education subsite.  The site is segmented into 5 themed areas, each of which contains 3 primary activities and a mystery challenge. The primary activities are each individual learning interactives which were conceptualised through a collaborative approach taken by the Link development team and the AWM project team. Each of the interactives were measured against a matrix of requirements including key learning areas, learning styles, major conflicts and service areas to ensure that the broad range of AWM requirements were covered and that the site was suitable for use as a teacher’s aid, covering broad areas of curriculum requirements.

Consulting Approach

A key part in the development of the KidsHQ site was designing an interface that not only appealed to upper primary students, but that was also appropriately respectful to the sensitive subject matter of conflict. It was important that the use of cartoon style illustrations did not satire or humour the subject in any way, yet still provided a fun and enjoyable feel for the students. Directing a team of highly skilled illustrators and designers, Link applied the pictured design look and feel throughout the site.

Development Solution

The KidsHQ website was developed entirely in Macromedia Flash 5.0. The site consists of content rich learning activities and supporting collection material which are all managed by an ASP driven Content Management System. The site also features a sophisticated tracking function that follows registered users’ progress throughout the site and unlocks bonus activities after certain stages are completed.

Successful Outcome

On Thursday, 19 February 2004, KidsHQ was launched by the Minister for Veteran’s Affairs with much success at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.

The KidsHQ website has been very well received by both teachers and children and the education area of the website has received an enormous boost to visits since the new site went live.  The site was a finalist in two categories for the Australian Interactive Media Industry Association Awards in 2005 for Best Arts/Cultural Website and Most Successful Website.
